The Florida Wild School

Florida Wild School is our outdoor learning community where children build real-world skills through meaningful experiences in nature. Guided by a seasonal, place-based curriculum, students explore woodworking, gardening, foraging, whittling, nature journaling, herbalism, mindfulness, environmental stewardship and more while developing confidence, resilience, and lasting friendships.

Our educators intentionally cultivate an environment where children are known, challenged, and supported as they grow.

How Learning Happens Here

For over a decade, we’ve worked professionally with children in outdoor learning environments while continually refining our educational approach. Alongside our work with students, we’ve mentored hundreds of educators and parents, and our work has been featured in magazines and educational publications.

Our educational approach is grounded in the The Meaningful Method™. Our work is informed by research in child development and experience passionately working with children outdoors. Programs are intentionally relationship-centered, allowing mentors to know each student well and support their growth over time.

What do Florida Wild School students learn?

Probably everything you wished you learned in school.

What makes Florida Wild School different?

Florida Wild School wasn’t built to follow a trend. It was built on an educational philosophy we’ve spent more than a decade living, refining, and putting into practice…one rooted in curiosity, meaningful work, connection with nature, self, and community.

We don’t rush children from one activity to the next or create projects simply because they’ll look good in a photo. We focus on the present. The work at hand. We believe deep learning takes time. Like a healthy forest, it grows gradually from strong roots.

Students return week after week, building long-term projects, developing practical skills, and forming meaningful relationships with people and place. The same educators mentor them throughout the year, getting to know each child’s strengths, interests, and challenges.

Here, learning unfolds through the changing seasons, authentic projects, shared experiences, and the trust that grows from being part of a genuine community.

Monthly Community Days

Once each month, students from all programs and their families gather for seasonal celebrations, hikes, a campout, kayaking adventures, potlucks, and other shared experiences.

These gatherings strengthen friendships, connect families with similar values, and continue building the community that makes Florida Wild School unique.

Our Wild School students also participate in a Makers Market!
Throughout the year, students create handcrafted projects during class and, if they choose, continue creating at home. The Makers Market gives them the opportunity to share and sell their creations while developing creativity, craftsmanship, confidence, and entrepreneurial skills.

AJ and John are simply amazing. I sent all three of my kids to Wild School and they all loved their time there. None of my kids were overly interested in nature based school, but when I picked them up after the first day, they were so excited to go back the next day. Not only were AJ and John able to ignite a love of learning about all things wild, but beyond that, they came home with so many more tools, tools I didn’t even realize they were missing! From various artistic skills, to plant identification, to emotional regulation, and so much more, everything was done in such a cohesive, deliberate, and well thought out way. My kids felt safe, happy, and HEARD. I can’t recommend this program enough. Thank you, AJ and John for all that you do for our kiddos!
My kiddo and I met AJ and her kiddos last Summer Solstice. Since the moment we met them, they have been a bright light in our lives. We have learned, experienced, and discussed so many wonderful topics. Now, my kiddo gets to be a part of A Wild Home through the Wild School. I have seen AJ teach throughout these months and always am in awe of how much she pours into the kiddos. My kiddo always feels heard, supported, safe and just loved!!! AJ meets exactly where my kiddo is at as she does with every single student. Our 1 hour drive is so worth the quality we encounter each and every time we are around AJ. A Wild Home is such a special place and I wish everyone could experience it!

My daughter absolutely loves every day at Wild School. From the very first class, she came home excited to share everything she did. Even though they’re learning so much, it feels like play to her because it’s not a typical indoor classroom and she loves that. The lessons are meaningful and practical, and I couldn’t recommend Amanda, her team, and the school more highly.

AJ has a true gift of educating and nurturing her students and I highly recommend gifting your child the opportunity to learn from her and explore and experience all that this wild school has to offer!
